Over time, many engines become contaminated with sludge, varnishes and gums, which coat the pistons, cylinder walls and bearings and can block oilways, caused low oil pressure and in extreme cases engine failure.  Cleaning your engine once in a while with a mild flushing agent, added to the old oil, will release the sludge and dissolve the varnishes and gums which can then be expelled from the engine when you drain the sump and discard the old oil filter.  You will probably be surprised by the filth that comes out of your engine.
