Compton Cemetery Chapel is a Grade I Listed building created by Mary Watts (11849-1938) between 1894 and 1904. Its modest scale and location in the heart of a Surrey village have made it a 'hidden treasure', not know to as many as it should be, but loved by those who have visited. An Arts & Crafts masterpiece of national significance, it is relatively unique in England in drawing its inspiration from Byzantine and Celtic models. But it is the extraordinary wealth of decoration, entirely fashioned by Mary and her team of crafts-people and local villagers, that makes the building such a fantastic work of art.
